Government call for digitalization of agriculture data gained foothold in Misamis Oriental, with its elected officials putting up the “Mindanao’s “First Digitalized” agriculture-based information.
“Misamis Oriental makes history as the first Mindanao province to establish a digital database for its agriculture and fisheries sectors, including production maps and volume and market access,” Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chairman Manny Pinol announced on Nov. 4.
Sec. Piñol and of Misamis Oriental Gov. Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano signed a Memorandum of Agreement in simple ceremonies here Nov. 3 to mark the start of digitalized agri program in the province.
Gov. Emano described the program as the” final step to the agricultural and fisheries modernization” of his province.
The MinDA will assist the Provincial Government in the gathering of data and in the establishment of the database which will later be linked to the MinDA Tienda program, Sec. Piñol said.
When completed, Misamis Oriental will be the first Mindanao province to have an accurate database for its farmers, fishermen, production areas, geo-maps and market information,” he pointed out.
Each and every individual farmer and fisherman will be listed up in the data-base including their commodities, their production areas, the volumes, the assistance provided by the government and the expected harvest date, he said.
“With this, we will be able to determine our strengths and our weaknesses and the interventions for our producers to access the market,” the MinDA chief said.
He said the Misamis Oriental model is expected to be replicated in all the other provinces in Mindanao as MinDA prepares the digitalization of the whole region.
During his stint at the Department of Agriculture, Sec. Sec. Piñol had pushed for digitalization of agricultural data across the country. But unforeseen events, including his unheeded arguments for the building-in of safety nets for farmers in the deliberation of the Rice Tariffication Law, derailed the campaign.
MinDA Communication Division Director Chief Dr. Adrian Tamayo expressed elation that Sec. Pinol in his new turf has begun to realize his derailed thrust in the DA.
