GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Army Rangers shot dead two members of the Dawlah Islamiya in a clash Monday, January 31, in nearby Tupi town in South Cotabato.
Personnel of the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion were to verify the reported sightings of Dawlah Islamiya members in Barangay Lapu in Polomolok when they were fired at, sparking a gunfight.
Two Dawlah Islamiya members, Zaypol Nilong and Salahuddin Usman, were killed in the ensuing encounter, according to the Tupi municipal police and officials of the 1st SRB.
Major Gen. Juvymax Uy, commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division that has operational control over the 1st SRB, said Tuesday the slain Dawlah Islamiya members were followers of Zaiden Jade Nilong, tagged in a number of deadly bomb attacks in central Mindanao in recent years.
The companions of the slain Dawlah Islamiya members scampered away when they sensed that Army Rangers were about to encircle their position.
In a report to Uy, Lt. Col. Raymond Rapi, commanding officer of the 1st SRB, said his subordinate-Rangers recovered an M16 assault rifle each from the two Dawlah Islamiya fatalities. PMT Desk Staff
