MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – The incumbent mayor of Lanao del Sur town of Tubaran is re-elected for a second term in special polls for its 12 villages (barangays) held on Tuesday, May 24.
Mindanao Voices, a regional online news service, reported incumbent Mayor Khaledyassin D. Papandayan obtained 3,873 votes while his opponent Nashif Madki got 1,854.
Municipal polls officials led by Comelec local official Ibrahim Abu, proclaimed Papandayan winner on Wednesday morning at the provincial new capitol complex here.
The supposed May 9, 2022 elections in Tubaran was marred by hostilities, prompting Comelec to postpone it to May 24, 2022.
The Tubaran special elections have been generally peaceful, according to Philippine Information Agency (PIA) quoting police authorities.
“So far normal, generally peaceful, no incident happened because we have procedures in place,” police provincial acting chief PCol. Jibin Bongcayao said in mixed English and Filipino languages.
Unlike the May 9 elections where teachers served as electoral board members, trained police personnel manned the polling precincts acting as the special board of election inspectors during the one-day special polls while other policemen and soldiers guarded the voting centers.
Bongcayao said around 600 policemen and 400 soldiers were deployed to secure the special elections of whom 45 police were to serve as special BEIs.
There are nearly 7,000 residents eligible to cast their ballots in the 12 barangays subjected to special polls on Tuesday. (TRS)
